Protesting graduates clash with police near Colombo Hilton



A large number of protesting unemployed graduates who begun a march to Temple Trees from the Fort railway station clashed with riot police after they were stopped near the Hilton Hotel in Colombo. Some roads in the area are now closed as result of the protest.

According to reports the students had to disregard the barricade and had pushed them over in their attempt to reach Temple Trees, but were forced to stop when the police fired tear gas and water at them.

UNP MP Range Bandara & family protest near parliament



UNP MP for Puttalam Palitha Range Bandara, accompanied by his wife and two children, staged a sit-down protest near Parliament.

The parliamentarian demonstrated against the arson attack on his home and political office in Madampe some weeks ago.

'Defend independent media in Sri Lanka': Overseas Press Club of America writes to SL President



The Overseas Press Club of America has sent an open letter to Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa, highlighting the recent attacks on press freedom in Sri Lanka. While pointing out the fact that Sri Lanka has become one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, the letter urges swift action to free imprisoned journalist J.S.Tissainayagam and to protect independent media in the country.

Your Excellency:

Imagine waking up one day and finding that you cannot speak. No matter what you do, the words do not come; no sound passes your lips. Nor can you write. Your fingers are locked. You are utterly silent, and all your precious thoughts are imprisoned in your mind. You are no longer able to lead, or teach, or stir your people to action or still their fears. Imagine your people waking one day to find the same thing has happened to them. There is no exchange of information, no new thinking.
